Metabolic Balance for Weight Loss — What 5 Years of Results Have Taught Me

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the contradictory information about weight loss — keto vs paleo, calories vs hormones, cardio vs weights - you are not alone. I've been there myself.

As a nutritionist in Penrith and Western Sydney, I've tried and tested more approaches than I can count — both personally and with my clients. Keto, paleo, low calorie, high protein, vegetarian, intermittent fasting, with cardio, without cardio. And you know what makes it genuinely confusing? There is science to back up all of them.

After nearly five years of using Metabolic Balance as my primary weight loss and metabolic health program, I can honestly say I still get excited by what I see with every single client. The results continue to surprise and delight me — even when I know exactly why they're happening.

This post is my attempt to share what I've actually learned — the things that have changed how I practice, how I think about weight loss, and why I believe this program works when so many others don't.

How I Found Metabolic Balance

I didn't set out to work in weight loss. When I completed my Bachelor of Health Science in Nutrition I wanted to work in children's health. But I couldn't lose weight myself — and that matters when you're trying to help other people do the same.

At the time I was following a vegetarian diet — because, you know, the science. But I got quite sick. Awful gut symptoms, fatigue, the works. That tends to happen when your diet isn't giving you adequate B12, zinc and iron.

A colleague I'd studied with suddenly looked amazing. Glowing, lighter, energetic — and she had also been vegan. I asked her what she was doing and she rang me to say she'd trained in Metabolic Balance, had made the difficult decision to stop being vegan due to chronically depleted iron and B12, and now felt extraordinary.

I trained as a Metabolic Balance practitioner, did the program myself and with my husband, and received the best practical education about nutrition, weight loss and energy metabolism that I should have received at university. We both lost weight — and more importantly, we learned how to eat for our bodies.

We're not perfect. We travel, we love eating out, we've had stressful periods where weight crept back on. But we both know that at any point we can go back to our plans, stick to them for a month, and drop those kilos back down — not to mention feeling dramatically better in the process.

What a Client Said That Stayed With Me

Recently a client said something that perfectly captures why I keep doing this work.

She had worked in the food industry for many years — someone who spent her life cooking beautiful meals for others. She came to me through a referral from another nutritionist who wanted her Metabolic Balance clients to have hypnotherapy support alongside the program.

She said: "Starting Metabolic Balance was a complete revelation for me. For the first time in my life, someone taught me how to eat properly — I realised I never knew how to eat for my body."

That is what I see time and time again. The program strips away the guesswork. You're not chasing the latest trend or relying on willpower — you're following a plan designed for your body, based on your blood test, your health history and your biochemistry.

What Five Years Has Actually Taught Me

1. Education is an investment for life

For people struggling with weight gain, high cholesterol and inflammation, there is no shortage of options — medications, gym memberships, weight loss injections, supplements. And all of these have their place.

But knowing what to eat, when to eat and how to eat is an education you carry with you forever. And I can tell you from experience — eating low calorie is not the answer. It's not the what. It's not the how. In many cases it's exactly what not to do.

2. Let the food do the work

One of the most important shifts I've made as a practitioner is learning to trust the program before reaching for supplements. My instinct as a nutritionist is always to reach into my mental toolkit — protocols for this, formulas for that. There are great supplements that work beautifully for many conditions.

But for most everyday complaints — joint pain, reflux, bloating, low energy — I now start with Metabolic Balance first and let the food do its job. Nine times out of ten those symptoms clear up on their own. Every time, I'm amazed. Though I'm no longer surprised.

3. Intolerances aren't always what they seem

Clients often come to me convinced they can't tolerate gluten or dairy. In the early days I would take them at their word and remove those foods. Now, unless there's a clear allergy, I often suggest we keep them in and see what happens.

What I find — consistently — is that once inflammatory foods are removed and anti-inflammatory whole foods are added, people can suddenly tolerate the yoghurt and the rye bread they thought were problems all along. The food wasn't the issue. The inflammation was. Remove the inflammation and the intolerances often disappear with it.

4. Blood sugar is the key to cravings — and hypnotherapy fills the gap

This is the lesson that has most changed how I work.

Clients often come to me wanting hypnotherapy to address intense sugar cravings — the kind that feel out of control, like genuine addiction. And hypnotherapy absolutely has a role to play here, particularly for emotional eating and the subconscious patterns driving the behaviour.

But what I've found is that for many clients, simply starting Metabolic Balance and stabilising blood glucose dramatically reduces or completely eliminates cravings — often within the first two weeks. When blood sugar is dysregulated, sharp glucose drops trigger intense cravings. Balance the blood sugar and the cravings dissipate. It happens faster and more easily than most people believe possible.

Where hypnotherapy becomes invaluable is for the clients where cravings persist beyond the dietary changes — or where emotional eating, stress, self-sabotage or deeply ingrained beliefs are the real driver. In those cases I combine both, and the results are consistently the most powerful outcomes I see in my clinic.

Whether you need nutrition first, hypnotherapy first, or both together — that's something we work out in our initial conversation.

5. Mindset is not optional

The most consistent predictor of long term success with Metabolic Balance isn't how closely someone follows the plan in the first two weeks. It's their mindset — their belief that change is possible, their relationship with food, and whether they've addressed the emotional patterns that have driven their eating for years.

This is why I added clinical hypnotherapy to my practice. Not as a nice add-on, but as an essential tool for the clients who need more than a food plan. Some people need their mindset shifted before the nutrition can take hold. Others need the nutrition to stabilise their biochemistry before the mindset work really lands. Every person is different — and working with both means I can meet you wherever you are.

How Metabolic Balance Works

In a nutshell:

  • It is a whole food program — no shakes, no meal replacements

  • Your personalised plan is based on a blood test of 36 markers, your body measurements, health conditions and medications

  • Three balanced meals per day — breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Each plate includes protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats

  • You are coached one on one throughout the entire program — face to face in Penrith or online anywhere in Australia

  • Educational modules to support your understanding of your own metabolism

  • Covered by some major health funds depending on your extras cover

This program is for the person who is done guessing. Who is tired of feeling tired. Who wants someone to walk alongside them for four to six months while they reset their metabolism and build healthy eating as a genuine habit — not a temporary fix.
