Online Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy for IBS — Australia-Wide via Zoom
The Same Evidence-Based Treatment. No Travel Required.
Maybe you've already looked for a gut-directed hypnotherapist and found the options nearby were limited — or the closest one is an hour or two away, and fitting in weekly in-person sessions on top of managing your symptoms feels like one more thing on an already full plate.
Or maybe you're simply wondering whether hypnotherapy actually works over a video call the same way it does in person.
It does. Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a guided, verbal process — there's no equipment and no hands-on component, so there's no reason a focused, relaxed state can't be reached just as effectively over Zoom as sitting across a desk. Clients right across Australia, from regional towns to other capital cities, do this work entirely online, with outcomes that match in-person treatment.
Does Online Hypnotherapy Really Work as Well?
It's a fair question, and one worth answering directly rather than glossing over. Digital delivery of gut-directed hypnotherapy has itself been studied — including a randomised trial comparing digital gut-directed hypnotherapy with muscle relaxation for IBS, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (reference here), with results supporting its effectiveness.
Hypnotherapy doesn't rely on being in the same room; it relies on your ability to focus and relax, which works just as well at home as it does in a clinic chair, in fact, many clients find it just as relaxing, if not more so, at home.
What Is Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy?
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is not general relaxation or stress management — it's a specific, clinically validated approach developed for IBS and other functional gut disorders.
IBS and related conditions involve visceral hypersensitivity — the gut's nervous system becomes so reactive that ordinary digestive sensations register in the brain as pain, urgency or alarm. Chronic stress, anxiety or years in a heightened nervous system state make this worse, creating a cycle where gut and brain keep escalating each other.
Sessions work directly on this gut-brain axis, using guided imagery and targeted hypnotic suggestion to:
Calm visceral hypersensitivity
Downregulate the stress and fear response tied to gut symptoms
Release anticipatory anxiety around food, travel or being away from a bathroom
Retrain the gut-brain pathway to respond with calm rather than alarm
Support broader nervous system regulation
Rebuild trust in your body
The Evidence
Gut-directed hypnotherapy has one of the strongest evidence bases of any behavioural treatment for IBS. It was pioneered in Manchester, UK, by Professor Peter Whorwell, whose original trials and later long-term follow-up work found that most patients who respond maintain their improvement for years - some studies tracking benefits out to five years.
In Australia, Dr Simone Peters at Monash University was the first researcher to formally study gut-directed hypnotherapy's efficacy for IBS, later founding a gut-directed hypnotherapy program at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. It's recognised internationally too — the American College of Gastroenterology's IBS management guideline includes gut-directed hypnotherapy among the evidence-based brain-gut behavioural therapies recommended when dietary change alone hasn't fully resolved symptoms.
Across the research, roughly 70-80% of appropriately selected patients see meaningful improvement, with benefits that often hold up well beyond the treatment period itself.

A Uniquely Powerful Combination
Most online IBS hypnotherapy options fall into one of two categories: a hypnotherapist with no nutrition background, or a self-guided app with no practitioner at all. Very few offer a real, tailored combination of:
A Bachelor of Health Science in Nutrition and Dietetic Medicine
An Advanced Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy
Training in gut-directed hypnotherapy specifically
EMDR for trauma and anxiety
Training in Functional gut testing including:
SIBO breath testing
Microbiome testing (Microba)
Functional pathology
That means your hypnotherapy is informed by a complete picture of what's happening in your gut biochemically, not delivered in isolation from it - and functional testing is just as accessible online as it would be in person, with kits posted to you and results reviewed together over Zoom.
Who is this for?
This may be right for you if:
You've been diagnosed with IBS, functional dyspepsia, or another functional gut disorder
You have chronic bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea or unpredictable bowel habits
Your symptoms flare with stress, anxiety or emotional overwhelm
You've tried elimination diets, probiotics or medication with limited or short-lived results
You don't have a qualified gut-directed hypnotherapist near you, or would simply prefer not to travel
You're ready to address the root cause, not just manage symptoms indefinitely
How Online Sessions Work
Sessions run over Zoom, generally 45-60 minutes. All you need is a private, quiet space and headphones. Your initial consultation covers your full history the same way an in-person appointment would; from there, we build a plan combining gut-directed hypnotherapy with nutritional support where relevant. If functional testing is recommended (SIBO breath testing or a Microba microbiome test), kits are posted to you, and results are reviewed together on a follow-up call. Time zones aren't a barrier — sessions can be scheduled to suit clients anywhere in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does online hypnotherapy actually work?
The same way an in-person session does - through guided verbal relaxation and targeted suggestion. Video calls work just as well as being in the same room; the process doesn't depend on physical presence.
Do I need any special equipment?
Just a private, quiet space, a device with a camera and reliable internet, and headphones if you have them.
Headphones can make the experience more enjoyable. Try to book at a time when there is no one around to interrupt you.
What if I'm in a different time zone?
Not a problem — sessions are scheduled to suit clients across all Australian time zones. If you can’t find a time that is suitable for you, please send me a message via the contact form here
Is it really as effective as in-person treatment?
Research on digitally delivered gut-directed hypnotherapy supports its effectiveness, and in clinical practice, outcomes for online clients are comparable to those seen in person.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients notice meaningful change within three to six sessions, depending on history and symptom severity.
Can I still see my own GP, gastroenterologist or dietitian?
Absolutely — this works alongside your existing care team, not instead of it. You are strongly encouraged to continue working with your GP, gastroenterologist or dietician.
If I need further testing, can I still get SIBO breath testing or microbiome testing if I'm not local?
Yes. Testing kits are posted directly to you, and results are reviewed together over Zoom.
