Hypnotherapy for Anxiety

For the Over-thinkers, the Worriers and the ones who Can't Switch Off

You can't remember the last time you felt truly relaxed. There's always something — a low hum of worry sitting just beneath the surface, a tightness in your chest that never fully releases, a sense that something is wrong even when everything is technically fine.

And then it's 3am and your mind is wide awake. Replaying the conversation from yesterday. Rehearsing the one you need to have tomorrow. Running through every possible worst case scenario with exhausting thoroughness. Your body is tired. But your brain simply will not stop.

If that sounds familiar — you are not broken. You are exhausted. And there is a way through.

Anxiety Lives in the Body, Not Just the Mind

Most people think of anxiety as a thinking problem. But anyone who has experienced it knows it's also deeply physical - the tight chest, the shallow breathing, the jaw that's permanently clenched, the gut that's always unsettled, the shoulders that live somewhere near your ears.

That's because anxiety is a nervous system response. It's your body's threat detection system - designed to keep you safe - running on overdrive. And when it's been running that way for months or years, hyper vigilance becomes the new normal. Your body forgets what calm actually feels like.

This is why telling yourself to "just relax" doesn't work. You can't think your way out of a nervous system that's stuck in fight-or-flight. You need to work at the level where anxiety actually lives - the subconscious mind and the body.

That's exactly where hypnotherapy works.

How Hypnotherapy Works for Anxiety

Hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level — where our deepest beliefs, habitual thought patterns and threat responses live. Most of what drives anxiety is not conscious. It operates below the surface — in patterns laid down long before you had the words to describe them, in a nervous system that learned to brace for impact and never quite learned to let go.

Talk therapy works with the conscious mind. Medication works with brain chemistry. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious patterns that neither of those approaches fully reaches.

In sessions we work on:

  • Calming the nervous system and building a genuine felt sense of safety in the body

  • Identifying and releasing the subconscious beliefs and patterns driving the anxiety response

  • Reducing the emotional charge of specific triggers — whether social situations, health worries, work stress or relationship anxiety

  • Building new neural pathways associated with calm, confidence and ease

  • Developing practical tools — breathwork, visualisation, anchoring — for managing difficult moments in daily life

  • Restoring the ability to be present without the constant background noise of worry

EMDR for Anxiety Rooted in a Traumatic Event

For clients whose anxiety has roots in past trauma - a specific event, a difficult period, or a pattern of experiences that left a lasting imprint on the nervous system - I also offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing).

EMDR is one of the most extensively researched trauma therapies available. It works by helping the brain reprocess distressing memories that have become stuck - reducing their emotional charge and allowing the nervous system to finally move forward rather than remaining braced against the past.

Hypnotherapy and EMDR work beautifully together - hypnotherapy to build internal resources and create positive change, EMDR to clear the unresolved events that keep pulling the nervous system back into threat mode.

Why Anxiety Is Rarely Just Psychological

In my clinic I look at the full picture — because anxiety has physical drivers that are consistently missed:

Nutrient deficiencies — Iron, Vitamin D, B12 and magnesium are among the most common and most overlooked contributors to anxiety, nervous system dysregulation and poor sleep. A chronically depleted nervous system is a hyperactive nervous system. Yet a standard GP visit rarely includes a comprehensive micronutrient panel.

Blood glucose dysregulation — unstable blood sugar may trigger the stress response directly. When glucose drops too low the body releases adrenaline and cortisol — the same hormones involved in anxiety — creating a cycle of physical anxiety symptoms that many people never connect to what they're eating.

Gut health — as explored in our gut and anxiety blog, the gut and brain are in constant two-way communication. An imbalanced microbiome, chronic gut inflammation or IBS may directly drive anxiety symptoms through the gut-brain axis. If your anxiety and your gut issues arrived around the same time — that is not a coincidence.

Thyroid function — even subclinical thyroid dysfunction can produce significant anxiety, heart palpitations, sleep disturbance and nervous system reactivity that is frequently misattributed to stress or personality.

Before beginning hypnotherapy I run comprehensive blood work to screen for these physical drivers — because supporting the biochemistry and the subconscious mind together produces faster, deeper and more lasting results than either approach alone.

Who is this for?

Anxiety-directed hypnotherapy is for you if:

  • You experience constant worry, overthinking or an inability to switch off

  • You have panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety or generalised anxiety

  • Your anxiety shows up physically — gut issues, poor sleep, tension, fatigue or heart palpitations

  • You've tried medication or talk therapy and feel like something is still missing

  • You know your anxiety is disproportionate but can't seem to talk yourself out of it

  • You suspect there may be a physical component — gut health, hormones, nutrient deficiencies — alongside the psychological

  • You're ready to work at a deeper level and make lasting change

Hypnotherapy for Anxiety Western Sydney

What to Expect…

Every program is tailored to you. A typical initial consultation covers your full history — anxiety patterns, physical symptoms, sleep, diet, stress, gut health and any previous treatment. From there we develop a personalised plan combining hypnotherapy, nutritional assessment and EMDR where appropriate.

Blood work is recommended for most clients presenting with chronic anxiety — because identifying and addressing physical drivers early makes everything else work faster and more effectively.

Sessions are available in person at my clinic in Penrith, Western Sydney, or online via Zoom for clients anywhere in Australia.
