Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy
For IBS, Bloating, Gut Pain & the Anxiety That Comes With It
If you've spent years managing gut symptoms — the unpredictable bloating, the cramping, the urgent runs to the bathroom, the foods you've eliminated one by one until your diet feels impossibly small — and you've been told everything looks normal on your tests, you are not imagining it.
Your gut is real. Your pain is real. And there is a reason it keeps happening that most conventional treatment misses entirely.
The Missing Piece — Your Nervous System
Irritable Bowel Syndrome and chronic gut disorders are not purely digestive problems. They are nervous system problems expressed through the gut.
The gut and brain are connected through a powerful two-way communication network called the gut-brain axis. When the nervous system is dysregulated - through chronic stress, anxiety, trauma or simply years of living in fight-or-flight - the gut pays the price. Bowel movements slow down or speed up unpredictably. The gut lining becomes hypersensitive. Normal sensations become painful. Digestion becomes unreliable.
This is why dietary changes alone so often fall short. You can eat perfectly and still suffer because the nervous system driving the dysfunction hasn't been addressed.
Gut-directed hypnotherapy works directly on the gut-brain axis to calm the nervous system, retrain the brain's response to gut sensations, and restore normal digestive function from the inside out.
What Is Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy?
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is not relaxation therapy or general stress management. It is a specific, clinically validated and evidence-based therapeutic approach developed specifically for IBS and functional gut disorders.
It has been studied extensively — including in landmark research from the University of Manchester — and has been shown to significantly reduce IBS symptoms in the majority of patients, with results that are maintained long term. In some studies it outperforms dietary intervention alone.
In sessions we work on:
Calming visceral hypersensitivity — the way IBS sufferers experience normal gut sensations as painful or threatening
Downregulating the stress and fear response associated with gut symptoms
Releasing anticipatory anxiety around food, eating, and being away from a bathroom
Retraining the gut-brain pathway to respond with calm rather than alarm
Addressing the underlying anxiety, trauma and emotional patterns that keep the nervous system activated
Building a new relationship with your body — one based on trust rather than fear
The result is a gut that functions more predictably, a nervous system that responds more calmly, and a life that feels less controlled by your digestive system.
A Uniquely Powerful Combination
What makes this approach different is that I am not only a clinical hypnotherapist — I hold a Bachelor of Health Science in Nutrition and Dietetic Medicine and have over five years of clinical experience in functional gut health.
This dual background means the hypnotherapy is not delivered in isolation. My clinical nutrition training allows me to:
Identify dietary triggers and red flags that may be compounding your symptoms
Recognise when functional testing such as SIBO breath testing or Microba gut microbiome analysis would provide valuable insight
Ensure the hypnotherapy is powerful and targeted — informed by a complete understanding of what is happening in your gut biochemically, not just psychologically
For clients who want a truly comprehensive approach, gut healing nutrition can be incorporated alongside the gut-directed hypnotherapy — addressing the nervous system and the gut simultaneously for faster, deeper and more lasting results.
This is genuinely rare. Most hypnotherapists don't have a clinical nutrition background. Most nutritionists don't do hypnotherapy. Having both in one practitioner means nothing falls through the gap.
Who is this for?
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is for you if:
You have been diagnosed with IBS, functional dyspepsia, or a functional gut disorder
You have chronic bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea or unpredictable bowel habits
You notice your gut symptoms worsen with stress, anxiety or emotional overwhelm
You have tried elimination diets, probiotics and medications with limited or temporary results
You experience anxiety about eating, social situations, travel or being away from a bathroom
You suspect your gut and your mental health are connected but nobody has treated both together
You are ready to address the root cause rather than manage symptoms indefinitely
What to Expect…
Every client is different and sessions are tailored to your specific symptom picture, history and goals. A typical program includes:
An initial consultation to understand your full history — gut symptoms, stress and anxiety patterns, diet, lifestyle and any previous treatment. From here we develop a personalised plan combining gut-directed hypnotherapy with nutritional support where appropriate.
Sessions are available in person at my clinic in Penrith, Western Sydney, or online via Zoom for clients anywhere in Australia.
Most clients notice meaningful improvement within four to six sessions. Many experience significant relief much sooner.
