After using Metabolic Balance for Weight Loss for nearly 5 years, these are some things I’ve learnt….

As a nutritionist in Western Sydney, I’ve tried many different approaches for weight loss and high cholesterol over the years, for myself and my clients. But after nearly five years of using Metabolic Balance in my clinic, I can honestly say I still get blown away by what I learn with every client—and the changes we see together. I feel so excited watching them discover these things too. I’ll unpack this further…

If you feel overwhelmed or frustrated by all the mis-leading information out there, all of the contradictory info out there, that is completely understandable. For me personally, over the many years I’ve been studying, learning about and practicing Nutrition.

Different types of diets I have tried and tested:

  • Keto

  • Paleo

  • Low calorie

  • High protein

  • Vegetarian/Vegan

  • High protein in the morning

  • Intermittant fasting

  • With cardio

  • Without cardio

And you know what makes it harder? There is actually science to back up all of the above!

When I undertook my degree, I never intented to work in the weight loss sphere. I wanted to work in children’s health. The reason may have somethiing to do with the above list and all the science to back up… all of them.. but in all honesty, I couldn’t lose weight. At that point in time I had been dabbling in vegetarian diet, because, you know, the science.. but I got quite sick. Horrid gut symptoms, fatigue etc. thats going to happen when you can’t obtain any B12, zinc and iron from your food.

A colleague I’d studied with suddenly looked amazing. She was glowing, had lost weight, but she was glowing.. and she had been vegetarian/vegan also. I asked her on a facebook post what was she doing and she rang me and told me she’d trained in Metabolic Balance, had made the difficult choice to stop being vegan due to her chronically depleted iron and b12 and frequent illnesses and now felt amazing. I decided to do the practitioner training in order to do the program for both myself and my husband and subsequently received the best education about nutrition in regard to weight loss and energy metabolism and blood glucose that I didn’t receive at Uni. And we lost weight.

Now, we’re not perfect, we travel, we love eating out, we’ve had stressful times in our lives where we’ve sold and moved twice in a year, while juggling kids and businesses etc. So yes sometimes we put weight back on but we both know that at any point we can just go back and do a reset from our plan, stick to it for a month and drop those few kg back down, not to mention just feeling a whole lot better.

What prompted this blog post?

The other day a client said something to me that stuck with me.

I have recently trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy to support my clients with mindset and addictions and subsequently I’ve had other Nutritionists around Australia referring their Metabolic Balance clients to me for Hypno, because I get how MB works and I can therefore support them more efficiently with the hypnotherapy side of things.

This wonderful client had been referred to me. This client has worked in the food industry for many many years making wonderful meals.

She said “Starting Metabolic Balance was a complete revelation for me. For the first time in my life, someone taught me how to eat properly, I realised I never knew how to eat for my body”.

That’s exactly what I see time and time again. The program strips away the guesswork. You’re not chasing the latest fad or relying on willpower alone—you’re following a plan designed for your body.

So that leads me to sharing what lessons I’ve learnt about Metabolic Balance, Nutrition & Weightloss….There are more than this I’m sure but these are the top ones that has changed how I do Metabolic Balance compared to how I did it in the early days.

  1. Education is Invaluable. An investment in the rest of your life.

For people batting weight gain, high cholesterol and inflammation, there are so many things on offer these days. medications, gym memberships, weight loss injections, supplements... and all of these have their place.

But knowing ‘what’ to eat, ‘when’ to eat and ‘how’ to eat is an education that you can carry with you for the rest of your life.. and believe me, just eating low calorie is not the how. or the what. Its definitely the what not to do.

  2. Let the the Food do the Work.

The other amazing thing I love about Metabolic Balance is that, if you have looked into it at all, it is based on your blood test, your health conditions and medications (amongst other things). So often the practitioner in me, that has my mental folder of protocols for various conditions, formulas for this and for that... will start cataloguing what I can use, supplement wise.. there are great supplements that work for so many conditions. BUT, other than specific nutrient deficiencies (ie. Iron), I have learnt to now just start the program first, for most conditions such as joint pain and reflux and allow the clients to see the improvements with that alone.. and then if any supplements are needed for more complex conditions we might start that afterward.
9 times out of 10 for these every day annoyances, they clear up… And yes I am amazed and excited (but not surprised).

  3. Are Intolerances even… Intolerances?

Sometimes a client might say they can't tolerate gluten, or dairy, and once upon a time I would say, this is an intolerance, so yeah lets leave it out. I mean, I was taught that at uni, and there is evidence to explain intolerances…. but now, when using MB, I often advise to not take it out, unless its a clear allergy, and if it comes up on their plan, we see what happens... I’ll swap it out if we need to. It amazes me (but no longer surprises me) how frequently, would you believe it, they can tolerate the yoghurt and the cheese after all, or they can tolerate the Rye bread... what has changed? Perhaps it may be the type of dairy, yoghurt is more easily tolerated than milk for example, but more often than not, I believe it is because inflammatory foods have been removed. Removing inflammatory foods, and increasing ‘anti-inflammatory foods’, reduces the inflammatory response…. go figure.

  4. What are Cravings anyway?

As I now offer a more comprehensive package including hypnotherapy. I trained in this to help with addictions (sugar, alcohol etc) and to help with confidence building and motivation. I have a number of clients that have benefited from this greatly and we have started off with a few hypno sessions to get them ready to believe in themselves and get ready for this new season in their life to become the healthiest version of themselves.

But.. . I have other clients who consider it for intense sugar cravings. I’m talking about sugar cravings that are out of control. I’ve seen such amazing results with MB that lately I just suggest we just start with the foods and see what happens and if they'd like to bring in hypno down the track we can. What amazes them, and me (but no longer surprises me) is that the sugar cravings often substantially disappear. Sometimes completely, sometimes about 70-80% in which case I might add in a little extra support if they need it.

This is the power of balancing blood glucose’. When we have dysregulated blood glucose, we have sharp drops in glucose which leads to intense sugar cravings. Adjusting the diet in a way to remove those sharp drops and the cravings dissipate. And this happens much quicker and easier than you can possibly imagine.

    How Does Metabolic Balance Work?

Firstly I do have another page dedicated to explaining what MB is, and how it works and my costings Here. But in a nutshell:

  • It is a whole food program,

  • Based on a blood test of 36 blood markers, weight, height, body measurements, and health conditions and medications….

  • It is a food plan based on this data, with a food list completely individualised to you and your body.

  • It is based on 3 meals per day, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  • It is a whole food diet. No supplements or shakes - unless something in your blood work or symptomology requires it - but thats up to you and me.

  • It is a balanced plate - Protein, Carbs (yes carbs) and Healthy fats. Those Carbs include lots of healthy vegetables, salads and fruit, Rye sourdough, and it may include potato, rice or oats. But I’ll go over that with you in more detail in person.

  • You are coached the whole way through by me in person, one-on-one. We can meet face to face or online or both.

  • There is educational material that you can work through at your own pace. Or you can just rely on our appointments as I usually teach you this when we meet.

  • You don’t have to be a great chef. I’m not. I’m a ‘throw it all in the pan’ kinda girl. So I’ll teach you how to do that too.

  • Frozen foods are absolutely great! Frozen veggies and proteins.

  • Yes it is covered by some major health funds - depending on your extras cover.

  • Yes there is an outlay. Alternatively, you do have the option of booking a standard consult, and we can work out your protein requirements and support you that way. And I do that with many clients as well. We get results, not as fast thought.
So for some people that is all they need, 1 consult to tweak a few things, 2-3 consults to make some changes bit by bit.

Metabolic Balance is for the person who doesn’t want to have to think about what to ea. They don’t want to think about calculating how many calories or grams of protein they need, they are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and they want me to walk along side them for 4-6 months as they reset their metabolism and set up these healthy habits as.. habits!

If thats you lets just have a chat on the phone to see if this is the right path forward. Book that phone chat here.
